What a recall actually means

A safety recall means the manufacturer has told DVSA that something on the vehicle needs fixing before it is safe: airbags, fuel lines, seatbelt pretensioners, brake components. It is not a suggestion. The fix is done free of charge by a franchised dealer, no matter how old the vehicle is or how many owners it has had.

If you are buying used, an outstanding recall is not necessarily a reason to walk away. It is a free repair the seller never bothered to have done, and a fair thing to ask them to sort before you hand over money.

What this check can and cannot see

We show the outstanding-recall flag DVSA holds against the registration. Many manufacturers now feed DVSA daily; the rest update monthly through the SMMT. Two honest limits: the flag does not say which recall is outstanding, and a vehicle with no flag is not guaranteed clear, because not every manufacturer supplies data yet. For the detail, use the official GOV.UK recall checker as well — our value is that you get the recall flag together with the full MOT history, the buyer score and the mileage trail in one search.
